In 2005 I took part in the second Mongol Rally driving from London to Mongolia. In 2004 six cars left London, in 2005 it was 43, last year it sold out within about 30 seconds. If you want to take part have a look at http://mongolrally.theadventurists.com. Now I believe it is around 200 cars but it may be more. There is also another organisation who arrange a similar rally and they can be reached at http://www.charityrallies.org/
I started driving with my brother Henry Chance as far as Istanbul I then drove alone down to Baku in Azerbaijan where I met my second co-driver Stephen Longe.
This site is a travelogue of that journey and explains some of the pleasures and tribulations of the trip. We drove using a Citroen 2CV, sensibly nicknamed Molly by my brother, that we got off Ebay for Paul Miller, who does up 2CV’s as a hobby. He generously ended the auction early and we got the car for slightly below market value.
Incidentally, if like my brother, you thought Outer Mongolia was a made-up place like Never Never Land it really does exist! Ulaanbaatar is some 8-10,000 miles / 16.000 km away from England depending on your route. We needless to say took the rather longer convoluted route through Turkey and across the Caspian Sea into the ‘Stans and on into Russia and Mongolia.
We were raising money for Charity and raised about £6,000.
I now live in Peru and the best way to contact me is through my personal blog at http://www.justinwheeler.net
